12 Fall Rainy Day Outfits That Keep You Dry and Chic
I really love autumn because the mornings aren’t as hot as they are in summer, and lightweight clothes give way to stylish autumn outfits.
Yes, but the rain usually arrives too – something I don’t particularly care for in the morning, as I hate using an umbrella and dislike getting wet.
Getting dressed in the morning suddenly turns into a bit of a struggle.
It’s still dark outside, and the windowpane is covered in water. Glancing at my boots, I wonder if they’ll stay dry until five in the afternoon.
Fall rainy day outfits are the ones we plan the least and need the most.
Should we wear the rain boots and look a bit like we’re going fishing? Will the nice trousers survive the walk to the car? And why does the forecast always say 20 percent in the morning and pour at lunch?
It’s a puzzle we face every fall, too.
If you’re looking for fall rainy day outfits that work in real weather, the trick is to dress for the 2 things rain ruins first: your hems and your feet.
In this post I show you 12 complete outfits sorted by the kind of rain outside, and how to dry everything when you get home, so you stop dreading the wet mornings.

What Makes a Good Fall Rainy Day Outfit?
A good fall rainy day outfit keeps the rain off your top half with a water-resistant layer, keeps your hems off the wet ground, and keeps your feet dry in shoes that can handle puddles.
In practice, that usually means 1 water-resistant coat, trousers or jeans that end above the ankle bone or tuck into boots, and 1 pair of waterproof shoes.
The way I see it, the rest of the outfit can be exactly what you’d wear on a dry day.
Why do rainy days make us feel so badly dressed? I think it’s because we try to wear our dry day outfit and just add an umbrella.
The truth is, I used to do exactly that. Long wide trousers and suede ankle boots. By the time I got to work, the bottom 2 inches of my trousers were dark and heavy, and my boots had white water marks on the toes.
I looked fine from the knees up. That was all.
It took me a few soggy fall days to see the pattern. The outfit didn’t fail everywhere. It failed at the bottom.
So if you only have a minute, here’s the one thing to remember.
Check the forecast for 5 pm, not just for the morning, and dress for the worse of the 2. Then make sure nothing you wear touches the ground: cropped trousers, tucked jeans or a skirt with boots.
12 Fall Rainy Day Outfits for Every Kind of Rain
Rain isn’t one kind of weather. A light drizzle at school drop off needs something very different from a cold, windy downpour on the way to a meeting.
So I sorted these rainy day outfit ideas by the rain itself. Find your kind of rain, and start there.
Part 1: Drizzle and On-and-Off Showers
These are the most common rainy days in early fall. It’s wet, but not dramatic. You need protection, not armor.
1. Throw a classic trench over a fine knit and straight dark jeans
The pieces:
- a water-resistant trench in beige or stone,
- a thin merino or cotton crewneck,
- straight dark jeans, ankle length,
- waterproof leather loafers or ankle boots,
- a small crossbody bag.
Rain level: light drizzle, short walks.
This is the outfit I’d choose if I could only have one trench coat outfit for rainy days. It works for the school run, and it still looks nice at coffee with a friend.
The trench is made for this weather. Thomas Burberry invented gabardine, the tightly woven fabric used for the classic trench coat, in 1879. Most trench coats today aren’t the original gabardine, but a good cotton or poly blend still sheds a drizzle easily.
The jeans are the secret here: ankle length, so the hem never touches a wet sidewalk.
A thin knit under the trench is better than a chunky one. Rain days are often mild, and you’ll walk into a warm shop or office.
Keep the colors simple. Beige and navy look calm with dark denim, and dark jeans hide a splash much better than light ones.
If you don’t have a trench yet, look for a water-resistant trench coat with a storm flap and a belt you can tie quickly.
Try your trench with your shortest jeans this week and see how much better the hem looks at the end of the day.
2. Layer a quilted jacket over a hoodie and wide cropped trousers
The pieces:
- a quilted jacket in olive or black,
- a soft grey or cream hoodie,
- wide cropped trousers in navy or charcoal,
- waterproof sneakers,
- a baseball cap.
Rain level: on-and-off showers, lots of walking.
This is the comfy rainy day outfit for school drop off, and I see it on Pinterest more than any other rainy look right now. I understand why.
The quilted jacket is light and it dries fast. The hood of the hoodie goes up over the cap when the shower comes, and down again when it stops.
A cap is honestly the best thing you can wear on a drizzly day. It keeps the rain out of your eyes and hides the frizz. No umbrella to juggle with a school bag and a coffee.
Wide cropped trousers stay clean because they end above the ankle. Long wide trousers do the opposite, they work like a mop.
Choose waterproof sneakers for women in white, grey or black. They look like normal sneakers, and your socks stay dry through the playground puddles.
Next time it drizzles, swap the umbrella for a cap and a hood, and see if you even miss it.
3. Pair a satin midi skirt with a chunky sweater and lug sole boots
The pieces:
- a polyester satin midi skirt in chocolate or black,
- a chunky cream or oatmeal sweater,
- a short water-resistant jacket,
- lug sole ankle boots,
- thin opaque tights.
Rain level: drizzle, mostly indoor plans.
This is one of the cute rainy day outfits I love for a slow Saturday. Satin and wool together look soft and a little unexpected.
One honest note.
Real silk satin and rain don’t get along. Water leaves marks on silk that are hard to remove. Polyester satin looks almost the same and doesn’t mind a few drops.
The midi length matters too. A midi skirt that stops at mid-calf stays dry, especially with ankle boots and tights underneath.
The lug sole boots give you grip on wet leaves. It’s not a small thing in October, when the sidewalks are covered with them.
If you’d rather wear trousers, the same sweater works with cropped wide trousers. I have more ideas for fall knits in my post on how to keep a white sweater outfit white, and they’re useful on wet days too.
Check the label of your satin skirt today. If it says polyester, it’s your new rainy weekend skirt.

Part 2: All-Day Downpours
The days when it rains from morning to night. You need a real waterproof layer and shoes that don’t care about puddles.
4. Tuck black jeans into tall rain boots with a long hooded rain jacket
The pieces:
- a long hooded rain jacket in black or olive,
- skinny or straight black jeans,
- tall rain boots,
- a thin wool sweater,
- a waterproof tote bag.
Rain level: heavy rain all day.
This is the rainy day outfit with black jeans that I trust the most when the forecast is just one big blue cloud.
Black jeans are made for downpours. Mud splashes disappear on them, even the water line from the car door.
Tuck them in completely, so the boot does all the work.
A long rain jacket that covers your thighs makes a big difference. Short jackets let the rain run straight onto your jeans, and wet thighs are the coldest thing in the world on a windy day.
For the boots, I’d choose plain tall rain boots in black or dark green, matte if you can find them. Glossy rubber looks more like gardening.
A waterproof nylon tote keeps your laptop and papers dry, and it wipes clean in a second.
Put your rain boots by the door tonight, so tomorrow’s downpour doesn’t catch you looking for them.
5. Style rain boots with a pleated skirt and wool knee socks
The pieces:
- a short pleated or A-line skirt in grey or brown check,
- wool knee socks that peek over the boots,
- short rain boots or Chelsea rain boots,
- an oversized check shirt jacket,
- a fine turtleneck.
Rain level: steady rain, city walking.
This one is pure Pinterest, and I like it more than I expected. A casual rainy fall outfit with rain boots that doesn’t look like you’re going to a festival.
The knee socks are the trick. A band of wool between the boot and the skirt makes the whole look feel intentional. It also keeps you warm, because rubber boots don’t insulate much.
Wool also behaves well in the wet. In a study published in the Journal of Natural Fibers, researchers measured how wool and wool blend fabrics hold heat when they’re wet, because so many of us end up wearing our clothes damp. That’s exactly what happens to socks on a rainy day.
Wool knee high socks in cream, grey or brown go with almost any rain boot.
Short Chelsea rain boots are easier to wear than tall ones, and they slip on in a second when you’re late.
Try your shortest skirt with knee socks and rain boots at home first. It feels less strange after one look in the mirror.
6. Go all black with a waterproof parka and wide cropped trousers
The pieces:
- a black waterproof parka with a hood,
- a black merino turtleneck,
- black wide cropped trousers,
- black waterproof Chelsea boots,
- a large claw clip.
Rain level: heavy rain, busy day in town.
When it’s pouring and you have 8 things to do, all black is the easiest answer. It looks put together, and it hides everything the city throws at you.
On a wet day, black is less a style choice and more a practical one.
The parka should have a proper hood with a brim. It keeps the rain off your face better than any umbrella in wind.
Hair goes up. A large matte claw clip holds it under the hood, and you don’t arrive with a wet ponytail down your back.
If all black feels too serious, add one light piece near your face, a cream scarf for example. I collected lots of ideas in my post on 28 all black outfit ideas for every season.
Lay out one all-black rainy day outfit on a chair tonight, and keep it there for the next downpour.
Feeling low on a grey, rainy day is real, but for most of us the effect is small. In a diary study with 1,233 people, researchers found that weather had only a small average effect on daily mood, with big differences between people. Sunlight affected tiredness the most. So if rainy days hit you harder than others, you’re not imagining it.
Part 3: Cold, Windy Rain
Late October and November rain is a different story. It’s cold, it comes sideways, and an umbrella turns inside out in 2 minutes. These fall rainy outfits are built for exactly that.
7. Wear a waxed cotton jacket with a Fair Isle sweater and dark jeans
The pieces:
- a waxed cotton or barn-style jacket in olive or brown,
- a Fair Isle or patterned wool sweater,
- straight dark jeans,
- waterproof leather lace-up boots,
- a wool beanie.
Rain level: cold rain and wind, outdoor plans.
This is my favorite of the cold weather outfits on this list. It feels like a weekend walk in the countryside, even if you’re only going to the market.
Waxed cotton is old but clever. The wax repels water, the jacket gets softer and better with every year, and you can rewax it at home.
A patterned sweater is the only bold piece here, and that’s enough.
The jeans go over the boots this time, so make sure they’re ankle length. Long jeans and lace-up boots end up wet at the back of the heel.
A waxed cotton jacket for women is a great long-term buy if you live somewhere with wet autumns. It’s also one of the best things to look for in second-hand shops, because the wax can be refreshed.
Look at the back of your jeans after your next rainy walk. If the heels are wet, they’re too long for rainy days.
8. Wrap a big wool scarf over a long puffer and leggings
The pieces:
- a long, water-resistant puffer coat,
- thick leggings or fleece-lined leggings,
- a long tunic sweater,
- a big wool scarf,
- waterproof winter boots.
Rain level: cold rain close to freezing.
Some days the rain is so cold it’s almost snow. That’s when I stop trying to look chic and start trying to stay warm.
A long puffer covers you to the knees, and most of them have a water-resistant outer fabric. Leggings dry fast and don’t hold water like jeans.
The big scarf is what turns this from a sports outfit into an actual outfit. Wrap it twice and tuck the ends into the coat.
At least here in Hungary, where I live, November mornings are often like this. It’s wet and cold, and it stays dark until almost 7. It’s the outfit I wear for the school run more than I’d like to admit.
Add a pair of women’s merino wool socks. Cold feet ruin the whole day, and merino stays warm even when it’s a bit damp.
Find your warmest scarf this week and hang it on the coat you’ll wear on the first freezing rain day.
9. Choose a hooded wool coat with a water-repellent finish and a knit dress
The pieces:
- a hooded wool coat or a wool blend coat with water-repellent finish,
- a ribbed knit midi dress,
- opaque fleece-lined tights,
- waterproof knee boots,
- a compact windproof umbrella.
Rain level: cold rain, short walks between places.
Not every rainy day is a parka day. If you’re walking from the car to the office or the theater, a good wool coat is fine, especially one with a hood.
A knit dress is warm and easy. It doesn’t wrinkle in the car, and it looks finished with almost no effort.
Knee boots and a midi dress meet in the middle, so no leg is left in the rain.
Fleece-lined tights are honestly one of the best inventions for cold, wet days.
Carry a compact windproof umbrella with a vented canopy. The cheap ones flip inside out at the first gust, and you end up carrying a broken umbrella and a wet coat.
Check if your favorite wool coat has a water-repellent finish on its label. If not, a fabric protector spray helps a lot.

Part 4: Rainy Workdays and Evenings Out
The hardest rainy days are the ones when you need to look good after you arrive. These rainy day outfits for work and evenings solve that.
10. Belt a trench over a blazer, cropped trousers and Chelsea boots
The pieces:
- a belted trench coat,
- a navy or grey blazer,
- a white or striped shirt,
- cropped straight trousers,
- waterproof leather Chelsea boots.
Rain level: rain on the way, a full day in the office.
This is my go-to rainy day work outfit, and my favorite of all the rainy day outfits for work office days. The trench protects the blazer, and the blazer is what people see in the meeting.
Cropped trousers are the single best rainy day decision for the office. They don’t drag on wet floors, and they don’t leave a damp stripe around your ankles all day.
Chelsea boots look professional, and waterproof leather Chelsea boots for women are easy to find now. They work with trousers and with dresses too.
If your office allows it, keep a pair of simple flats under your desk. Changing shoes after a wet commute takes 30 seconds and makes you feel human again.
I wrote a whole post about Italian fall outfits for work, and most of them work with a trench on top.
Leave a pair of flats at work this week. You’ll thank yourself on the first wet Monday.
11. Mix a faux leather jacket with a slip skirt for a rainy dinner
The pieces:
- a faux leather jacket in black or brown,
- a dark slip skirt in polyester satin,
- a fine black turtleneck,
- heeled ankle boots with a rubber sole,
- a small leather bag.
Rain level: evening showers, from the car to the restaurant.
For an evening out, I want to look a little dressed up even if it rains. This outfit does it without stress.
Faux leather and smooth, finished leather handle rain much better than suede. A few drops just roll off, and you wipe the jacket with a cloth when you get home. Who What Wear even lists the leather jacket as a rainy day staple in their guide to what to wear on a rainy fall day.
Suede is the one fabric I don’t wear on rainy evenings anymore. I learned it with a brown suede jacket that now has a darker shoulder forever.
A rubber sole on heeled boots is worth asking about. Wet restaurant steps and smooth leather soles aren’t friends.
If you love brown jackets as much as I do, my post on 5 ways to wear a brown jacket like an Italian has more evening ideas.
Turn your going-out boots over tonight and check the soles. If they’re smooth leather, they stay home when it rains.
12. Keep a cardigan, straight jeans and a packable rain jacket for the unknown days
The pieces:
- a long cardigan in camel or grey,
- a white T-shirt,
- straight jeans, ankle length,
- waterproof sneakers or ankle boots,
- a packable rain jacket in your bag.
Rain level: the forecast says maybe.
This is the outfit for the days when nobody knows. Sunny at breakfast, cloudy at lunch, raining at pick up.
The cardigan looks nice on a dry day and stays warm under a rain jacket. The jeans and shoes are ready for anything.
The packable rain jacket is the hero of this outfit, even if nobody sees it. It folds into its own pocket and lives in your bag all fall.
I like long cardigans for this, and I wrote about how to wear cardigans in a lot more detail.
Put a packable rain jacket in the bag you use most, and leave it there until spring.
My Honest Opinion About Rain Boots
I’ll say it. I don’t think you need rain boots for most rainy days in the city.
A good pair of waterproof leather ankle boots covers almost every fall rainy day. They look normal at the office, they’re warm, and you don’t walk around with hot, sweaty feet in rubber all day.
Rain boots are great for 2 things: real downpours and muddy places. Parks, gardens, the field behind the school, a walk in the woods. For those, I love them.
When I was a child in the village, everyone had rubber boots by the door. Nobody thought of them as fashion. You put them on when the path was muddy, and you took them off at the gate.
I still think about them that way. They’re a tool, and a good one. But for the walk from the tram to the office, I’d rather have leather boots and cropped trousers.
Spray your leather boots and your trench with a water repellent spray this weekend, before the next big rain. It takes 10 minutes and protects them for weeks.
After the Rain: Care, Colors and the Mistakes to Skip
This is the practical part. How to dry everything, which shoes to choose, and which colors make rainy days easier.
How to dry everything when you get home
Wool sweaters and scarves: never on the radiator. The Woolmark Company recommends you dry wool flat on a towel, out of direct sunlight, because hanging stretches the shoulders. I lay mine on a towel over the clothes horse.
Leather boots: stuff them with newspaper and let them dry at room temperature, away from heat. Change the paper after a few hours. When they’re dry, use a little leather cream, and cedar boot trees help them keep their shape.
Trench coat: hang it on a wide hanger so the shoulders keep their shape, and let it dry in a room, not near a heater. Once or twice a season, refresh the water repellency with a water and stain repellent spray.
Umbrella: open it halfway and let it dry in the bathtub or the shower. Folding it wet makes it smell after a week.
Jeans with wet hems: hang them upside down by the hem. They dry faster, and the wet part doesn’t spread up the leg.
The radiator is the enemy of almost everything you wore in the rain. I know it’s tempting. It shrinks wool and cracks leather.
Rain boots, waterproof leather boots or sneakers?
| Shoe | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Tall rain boots | Downpours, muddy parks, long walks | Cold feet, they need wool socks |
| Short Chelsea rain boots | Steady rain, school runs, errands | Water over the top in deep puddles |
| Waterproof leather Chelsea boots | Office, city, most rainy days | Need spray and leather cream |
| Waterproof sneakers | Drizzle, lots of walking | Mesh tops that let water in |
| Lug sole ankle boots | Wet leaves, slippery sidewalks | Mud stuck in the sole |
| Suede boots | Dry days only | Water marks that rarely come out |
Color pairs that hide splashes and still look good
Navy and camel: the classic trench coat outfit colors. Calm, and they hide light splashes very well.
Olive and cream: soft and outdoorsy. Lovely with quilted and waxed jackets, and with Fair Isle knits.
Black and grey: the most practical pair for heavy rain. Nothing shows, and it always looks put together.
Chocolate and oatmeal: warm and cozy for cold, windy days. Beautiful with wool and a brown satin skirt.
Charcoal and burgundy: one deep color near the face brightens a grey day. Try it with a burgundy scarf or beanie.
Keep the light colors on top and the dark colors at the bottom. Splashes go up from the ground, never down.
Mistakes to avoid on rainy days
| Long wide trousers that touch the ground | Cropped trousers or jeans tucked into boots |
| Suede shoes because the morning looked dry | Waterproof leather boots on any maybe day |
| A short jacket over a long sweater | A coat that covers the sweater completely |
| Light jeans with rain boots | Dark denim that hides splashes |
| Drying boots on the radiator | Newspaper, room temperature and patience |
| Cotton socks in rubber boots | Wool socks that stay warm when damp |
| Carrying a cheap umbrella in wind | A hood with a brim, or a vented windproof umbrella |

Fall Rainy Day Outfits: The Questions I Get Asked Most
What should I wear on a rainy day in fall?
On a rainy day in fall, wear a water-resistant coat, trousers or jeans that end above the ankle bone or tuck into boots, and waterproof shoes. Under that, wear what you’d wear on any fall day, like a thin knit or a cardigan. Check the forecast for the afternoon too, because rain often gets heavier later.
How do I keep my pants dry in the rain?
The easiest way to keep pants dry in the rain is to choose a length that never touches the ground. Cropped trousers, ankle length jeans or jeans tucked into tall boots stay dry far longer than long wide trousers. A long rain jacket that covers your thighs also protects the top part of your trousers.
What shoes are best for rainy days if I don’t like rain boots?
Waterproof leather Chelsea boots are the best rainy day shoes for most people who don’t like rain boots. They look normal at work and in town, and they keep your feet dry in light and steady rain. Waterproof sneakers are a good second choice for drizzly days with a lot of walking.
Is a trench coat waterproof?
Most trench coats are water-resistant rather than fully waterproof. They handle drizzle and short showers well, especially cotton gabardine, but heavy rain soaks through after a while. A water repellent spray once or twice a season helps, and for all-day downpours a hooded rain jacket or parka is the better choice.
How can I look put together on a rainy day?
You can look put together on a rainy day by keeping your outfit in 2 or 3 calm colors and making sure nothing is wet or muddy at the bottom. Dark colors on your lower half hide splashes. A tidy hairstyle, like a low bun or a claw clip under a hood, makes a big difference too.
What are good rainy day outfits for work?
Good rainy day outfits for work combine a trench or a smart rain coat with cropped trousers or a knit dress and waterproof leather boots. Keep a pair of flats at your desk to change into after the commute. Avoid suede shoes and long trousers on any day with rain in the forecast.
Are rain boots still in style in 2026?
Rain boots are still in style in 2026, especially short Chelsea rain boots and tall matte boots in black, olive or brown. On Pinterest, they’re often worn with wool knee socks and short skirts or with tucked black jeans. For the office, waterproof leather boots usually look more polished.
How do I dry wet leather boots without ruining them?
Dry wet leather boots by stuffing them with newspaper and letting them dry slowly at room temperature, away from radiators and heaters. Change the paper after a few hours. When they’re completely dry, use a little leather cream to keep the leather soft, and spray them with water repellent before the next rain.
What should I wear on a cold rainy day?
On a cold rainy day, wear a long water-resistant puffer or a hooded wool coat, warm leggings or jeans, a wool sweater and waterproof boots with wool socks. A big scarf and a beanie keep the wind out. Wool is a good choice because it still feels warm when it gets a little damp.

Slow October: How to Actually Enjoy the Fall Season
The Wet Hem I Still Get Every October
I’d love to tell you I’ve got rainy days figured out. I don’t.
Every October there’s one morning when the sky looks harmless. I put on my long trousers and my favorite suede boots. And every October, at about 4 pm, it starts to pour.
So I walk home with dark, heavy hems and a little smile, because I know exactly what I did wrong.
The difference is that now it happens once a year, not every week. The rest of the time my cropped trousers and good boots wait by the door, next to the trench.
For me, that’s the whole secret of fall rainy day outfits: you don’t need a new wardrobe, just a few pieces that don’t mind getting wet.
Which kind of rain do you get most where you live, the gentle drizzle or the cold, sideways kind?
